Hi, I’m Harlow Jones, and I’ve been thinking about ways I can give back.

After reflecting for a while, I realized that many of my friends wear hoodies, but what happens to them once they’ve outgrown them? That got me thinking—what if we could repurpose these hoodies to help those in need? And just like that, the idea came to me: let’s transform these hoodies into something that can make a difference for the homeless.

Empowering lives through compassionate support

The mission at the Unhoused Hoodie is to champion people from all walks of life. I want to make marginalized individuals feel the warmth of the community, regardless of their circumstances. I hope to foster connection and compassion through these beanie hats by engaging teens and seniors of my community as well. The goal is to give purpose to these groups by incorporating them in the collecting, cutting, and sewing process. Each hat is completely unique, incorporating patches from multiple donated sweatshirts. In the future, I hope to expand this practice to a national level. For example, I want to make these hats in college colors for college students. Through this practice, I utilize creativity to not only reduce waste, but create a sense of belonging for the underprivileged.

Are you interested in helping

Here’s how you could go about turning this idea into something impactful:

Collecting Hoodies

Reach Out to Friends and Community: Start by asking your friends, family, and community members to donate their old or outgrown hoodies. You can create a donation drive or set up a collection bin at local schools, workplaces, or community centers.

Clean and Sort: Once you’ve gathered a good amount of hoodies, please ensure they are clean

  • Cut the hoodies into 6”x6” square
  • Sew the squares together
  • Sew the hoodie

Get in Touch with Shelters

Reach out to other organizations, such as a senior facitily to see if they would like to help

Create a Cycle of Giving: After the first round of donations and distribution, encourage people to keep the cycle going. Maybe set up an ongoing donation system where people can donate hoodies anytime, and you can keep the giving consistent. Alternatively, work with local businesses to host hoodie donation bins.

Share the Journey: Documenting the project from start to finish will inspire others to join in. Whether through photos, videos, or blogs, you can share the impact your work is having and encourage others to take similar steps in their own communities.
